Threadless fork in old steel frame?
 

OK. I have an Lemond road bike that is about 10 years old (give or take a few). It is a steel frame Alp d'Huez that has served me well. Recently I got nailed by car (at slow speed so it wasn't too bad -- only broke collar bone) and the "Edge" carbon fiber fork broke. Frame is a little scratched but that is about it. While it is probably time to just but a complete new frame, I'm not sure I want to do that right now (I need to ride at least while I'm planning and figuring out what to get). The old fork used the old quill style stem (lately converted to the threadless adapter to use a threadless stem (needed for the oversize handlebars). Looking for a replacement fork, all I really see is threadless forks. Can I use a new threadless fork with the old steel frame that used a threaded fork? Is so, what do I need to make this work? Can I keep the current Campy headset or do I need a different type of headset? If it is not possible, does anyone know where I can get an old-style threaded fork? Thanks for the help.

You would need a 1" threadless headset and a 1" threadless fork. I think Nashbar may sell a cheap threaded carbon fork, though. One way or another, have the frame checked for any damage before you dump more money into it.

Threaded steel forks can still be found as well.

I've seen Tange chromed threaded road forks around. I want to say in the $50-$70 range. But you should also be able to do threadless with a new headset and stem, as above.

Check your stem adapter as well. If the stem adapter is a 1" quill, 1 1/8" stem type you will need to shim the stem (easy) or find a 1" stem for over-sized bars.

Threaded carbon forks are as rare as hens teeth and I wouldn't trust old/used ones as most are about 10 years old. Your best bet would be to get a 1" carbon fork and 1" aheadset.

Nearly all manufactures only make 1 1/8 size, but I think ITM made a 1" carbon fork and a good price called Visia up until recently as 2007. They should be still available.

If you want to use your old headset (threaded) and want a steel threaded fork, well, quite frankly your best bet would be ebay or check used. Very few manufacturers make 1 inch steel rigid forks apart from a few custom frame builders. Make sure the steerer length is the same as the old - broken - fork (if not, a forks steerer tube is about 3.5/4cm bigger than the frames head tube).

Your LBS should be able to order a new, 1" threaded steel fork, (likely chromed...)

...I see one in the '07 Hawley catalog I have, anyway.

You might as well go threadless, though.

How did you find the quality? Is it worthwhile? 170mm might be a little short (60cm frame) -- I'll have to check.

60cm frame you'll probably need around 200mm. Go threadless and sell the Campy headset on eBay.

I think you're right. It looks like I might actually need closer to 215-220mm, so I might actually have no choice. It looks like the Campy Record threaded headset I have would probably sell for $50 or so, enough to pick up a replacement threadless headset.
