Cleat/shoe bolt size

I'm adding a home made spacer/shim to my SPD-SL cleats and I need longer bolts. Anyone know what the tread and size of the bolts are? I'd like to know what I'm looking for at the hardware store. I tried to seach the forum, but didn't come up with anything. Thanks!

The threading on cleat bolts is M5x.8mm but the problem might be getting the proper head size. Most cleats have countersunk recesses for the bolt head and you need bolts that have marching heads of the right diameter. Take your cleats with you and be sure the bolt head will work properly.

Thanks, I found a local place that can get me some bolts. The heads are a bit different but they will work.

You could always buy longer SPD-SL bolts and then you wouldn't have to worry about getting the right heads. Shimano makes both 10mm and 13.5mm bolts - the standard bolts are 8mm.

Here are the Shimano part numbers:

10mm Y-42U 98070
13.5mm Y-42U 98060

Any shop that carries Shimano can get them for you from Shimano NA or QBP. I know that Excel Sports now have the 13.5mm and Competitive Cyclist have both lengths.

Hope this helps.
