Need a 1" threadless headset: Cane Creek or FSA?
Looking for a decent quality 1" threadless headset for my NOS Viner I just won online. Chris Kings are pretty expsensive (why the cost so much $$, I have no idea...).
I see mostly FSA and Cane Creek offered in this somewhat unusual 1" diameter. Suggestions?

I'm also baffled why anybody would pay so much for a headset. I have a Cane Creek S2 on my '00 Trek 5200. No issues after 30K miles.

FUNCTION: The crane creek s-6 has the stainless steel sealed bearings.

Cane Creek headsets seem to last forever which is probably why people pay so much for them. That makes sense for people riding tons of miles, but for the average Joe that rides a few thousand miles a year, it might be overkill unless s/he plans on keeping the same bike forever.

Kings last forever, look great, never need to be adjusted, and they're made at a relatively small firm in the U.S.

I just bought a frame off ebay that had a Solos on it. Looks nice, although I had to try a few times with the compression nut before it was tight enough to have no play in it. It might be my inexperience with carbon steerers and compression nuts, though.

Here's a picture of a Cane Creek S-2 on my Gunnar. I think that the 1" Cane Creek headsets use the same size bearings as their 1-1/8" headsets, and therefore the cups on the 1" ones don't look as streamlined as they might. I'm not sure about Chris King or others in this regard. But I think the quality of the Cane Creek headsets are top notch.

Do spacers typically come with a new headset? How do you know what size/how many to get if not?
