Fitting front wheel

The front wheel on my bike will not fit back on, the fork it too tight for it too fit in the slots and have tried levering them but no luck. I didn't take it off, it was posted to me like that but I can't see any damage that might have occured during transit.

I just wondered if I was missing something obvious? Or any suggestions? (Obviously tried cursing at it!)

Thankyou.

Most current forks have "lawyer's lips", that is projections at the bottom of the dropouts to retain the wheel even if the QR skewer or axle nuts are not tightened properly. So, to remove the wheel you have to "unwind" a QR skewer several turns or back off the axle nuts quite a bit to clear them.

If the previous owner removed the wheel, then tightened the skewer or nuts you will have to back them off to get it to fit, then tighten them again when you install the wheel.

Thanx Hillrider, I had done that (done the job before on other bikes) but your reply is appreciated. The fork is sitting on the nuts that hold together the central bit of the wheel, its a QR (not so quick to put back on!) and have taken the whole skewer out. So a mystery as to why it won't go back on.

Would take it to a bike shop Operator but a) my bike is my only transport and nearest bike shop is several miles away and b) I'm not ready to be beaten by a wheel...yet.

Sounds like you might of bent or tweaked the fork.

If the bike was packaged and shipped with nothing to protect the dropouts from damage, it is possible the box was dropped or crushed, resulting in the fork being laterally compressed, or the dropout slots getting pinched. Inspect your fork carefully or have a shop do it for you.
