brake cable issues

I am having major issues with trying to install a new brake. When I try and feed the cable through the opening in either the lever or the actual brake, it splays the cable and pushes up one of the cable strands. I now have a brake cable with an unwound strand going halfway up.

Where did I go amiss?

When you first got the cable, did you have to cut off one end since a lot of cables have a road fitting on one end and a MTB fitting on the other? If so, how did you cut it? If you used regular side cutter pliers, you frayed the end and that left a couple of strands out where they got caught on the housing or lever fittings.

A proper cable cutter makes a clean cut that leaves the strands smooth and easier to fish through the fittings without mishap.

it is possible to use wire cutters successfully. the sharper the better, and you need to examine/clean up the ends a lot of the time. I think there definitely is a "right tool for the job" here, but you can get by if you are careful.

Cable cutters, and a drop of super glue on the end will do the trick. bk

If you are in doubt about your cutters, close them tightly and hold them in front of a light. If you can see light between the cutting surfaces, you have cheap cutters or damaged cutters. Try to find an area that no light shows through and cut with that part of the tool.
