8 speed STI's on 7 speed cassette.

I have heard this will work pretty well, but I have my doubts. I have an old 96/97 cannondale R600, but the original rims are long gone. I have a clean set of Campagnolo Gamma's with 105 hubs, but they're 7 speed. Will this work until I can get a set of 8 speed. Just curious if the cable pull is close enough to do clean shifts.

Also a side question. Are Campagnolo Gamma rims hooked or not? I ran into a problem using some folding bead tires on other rims, but these look different. Still not certain they're hooked, but it definitely has a deeper ridge than most.,,,,BD

If the hubs are 7-speed (126 mm) they will probably be too narrow for the frame which is most likely 130 mm.

How about an axle change and a slightly wider spacer? They seemed to clamp in just fine, without that big of a gap. I also heard that some c'dales were spaced in between the two sizes, to accommodate either, but not sure about that.,,,,BD

It doesn't sound workable to me unless you can replace the freehub with an 8,9,10-speed freehub and a cassette compatible with your shifters.

7 and 8 speed parts work fine together. Just be sure to use the derraileur limit travel screws so the 8 speed shifter cannot over shift the derraileur and drop the chain off on either side. I like to set the shifter so it hits a hard stop as it tries to shift to 8 rather than having the cable go loose at the small cog end.

The hub width issue is another deal though. If the wheel is too narrow don't try to force flex the frame. Aluminium doesn't like that while with steel you can get away with it but it's still not a good idea.

I got out the trusty calipers, and the difference between the hub width and the dropouts is about 2.50mm +/-, so that would seem to substantiate the "in between" theory. Hmmm.,,,,BD

I have a nice set of 700's with the wider spacing, which came off an Adventure 400, but I think the rims are too wide and would require too big of a tire to clear the 600 dual pivot brakes. I guess I could buy a set of rims, I just didn't want to go there money wise right now.,,,,BD
