Shimano 400EX RD and ST-EF29 Question

Ok,

So now that I'm revamping my rear cassette and chain I dug around the net looking at cheap STI shifters. I found a pair of ST-EF29 shifters. I know they are listed for 3 X 7, however I have a 2 X 7 setup.

I believe they will work for a 2 X 7 correct?

Also, will my 300EX/400EX (FD/RD) be compatable with these shifters? From what little I could find the consensus was it should work fine.

One more question, assuming these will work, what do I need as far as cables/cable mounts (replacing old downtube shifters) when looking up the length/type?

Advice needed. Thanks guys.

Some folks suggest using a triple in double applications.
Your DRs will work fine.
AFAIK, all Shimano brifters come with the cable stops, cables, and housing you'll need. I'm not sure about flat bar units.

I'm thinking these will be a problem as they appear to be for straight/mtb handlebars.

Anyone used these style on a road bike? https://www.bikeparts.com/productinfo...418-55754.html

Thanks.

Cable stops for mounting on downtube shifter bosses come with every set of Shimano STI and bar-end shifters so any LBS should have a bunch of surplus sets at low cost.

Yeah, I learned that today making a few phone calls. I'm more concerned about orientation of these style shifters as they are meant to be mounted horizontally for mtbs not road bikes. Will these work with curved road handlebars?

They may not fit on road bars in any orientation. Road bars have a different diameter than MTB bars and the mounting clamps probably wont fit.
