10spd & 9 Spd compatibility?

Can I install a 10spd crank and 10spd front derailleur and run it with my shimano 6600 long cage and 9spd chain & rear cassette currently installed? Thanks

Yes.

What are you doing, replacing a triple with a double? You might need to change the shifter.

I have a similar question. Is it OK to have everything 9-speed *except* for the cassette and shifters? I'm piecing together a bike, and it is much cheaper to get 10sp STi shifters, and 9sp everything else.

You'll need a 10-speed chain.
Should work well with a double crank and probably with a triple.

Probably, what kind of crankset is it?

The crank is a Shimano Ultegra FC-6500 (double) 39x53t.

Edit: Whoops, you weren't asking me.

I have:
105 9spd shifters
shimano 6600 long cage
9spd cassette,
9spd chain

Wanting to install:
105 10spd crank 50-39-30 (wanting greater gear range for light touring but still a little beef with 50tooth for cruising w/the roadies) along with 10spd front derailleur..Will this work effectively together? Thanks

With a 9-speed chain running through a 10-speed front derailleur on a triple you're going to have a lot of chainrub on the derailleur. I think you'd have better luck with either a 9-speed triple front derailleur or a 10-speed chain, or both. The 10-speed FD is narrower than a 9-speed FD. A 9-speed chain is wider than a 10-speed chain. I would not combine a 10-speed FD with a 9-speed chain.
A 10-speed chain will work with a 9-speed cassette.
What works on a double won't always work on a triple.

Another short question:

While reading another forum thread, I stumbled upon the Shimano compatibility sheets. I am unsure about whether or not these indicate that I can use a 10-speed 105 (ST-5600) or Ultegra (ST-6600) shifter with the Dura-Ace FD-7700. The ST-5600 is completely omitted from the chart, and the ST-6600 is listed as only being compatible with the FD-6600 (unless I'm reading it improperly).

7700 is 9-speed; the others are 10-speed. Shimano will never document compatibility between the two. It was never a design goal.

They will probably work together, but don't bet on it.
