Will a Shimano MF 6208 freewheel fit . . .

my 1981 TREK 616 that has the original but worn Shimano 600 EX freewheel. Both are 13-28s.

If your 6208 is 7-speed, you MUST use a narrow-spaced chain.

If the Shimano freewheel is 6-speed it is "wide spaced". Shimano never made any Ultra-6 freewheels, i.e. narrow spaced freewheels. Those were, AFAIK, only made by Sun Tour.

That said, a 7/8-speed chain (aka narrow) is good for any freewheel or cassette from 5 to 8-speeds so it's the one to use. In fact, I don't think anyone is even making a decent quality 5/6-speed wide chain any more.

Thanks. I'm a novice here but I just acquired this bike and noticed that the teeth on each freewheel cog is slanted, as if the rear pulley was never in a straight line (off to the side) with the front derailuer and caused tension to the extent that if wore down each of the teeth. The derailuer is noisy, not quiet, so I'm thinking that this freewheel as got to go. I will let my LBS take a look but there is a freewheel on ebay now I may bid on. Am I makings sense?

YOU WERE CORRECT, THE young kid at the bike shop took one look at the slanted cog and said the freewheel was no good. Luckily, there was an old gray hair in the shop that knew better.
