External Bottom bracket issues...
Okay I have on older road frame a 99 gt edge steel frame that I'm building up for a road/commuter
But I ran into a snag and I'm not sure how to deal with it or whether it can be fixed or not. I got an Sram Groupo in the mail the other day and I started my build tonight... what I noticed was that when I had my Crank installed with the external bottom Bracket I had about 3-2.5 mm of play where the spindle would slide back and forth from left to right along the axle of the bottom bracket. And everthing was tightend down, Which is not good at all. I know this because i have a mountain bike that has a shimano one ... and there is no play whatsoever. How Should I approach this?
Can you see the space?
my bottom bracket shell is like 68-69.5mm in length/width . not diameter. is it possible the crank that I have sram rival is made for 73mm bottom bracket shells and not my 68?
Could I fix this with spacers where the cup meets the frame? both sides or on just one?
1.5mm on each side?
would this affect my chainline?
Do I need a new frame?
********** any input would help. Before I got my LBS whimpering and ready to bend over for the cost of fixing.
Thanks.

Very possible you need a space of some sort, not sure about Sram but some Shimano combos require one.

My FSA setup required a shim between the crank arm and bb to work correctly. I am surprised the Sram did not come with this included.
Nice paint job by the way. Pro or did you do it yourself.

Well I took my bike to my LBS and suprisingly didn't get *****... I think I got a good discount...I go in all the time and chat up the mechanics. But anyways.. the mechanic asked me for a shim... there wasn't one in my new in box crank. So I assume I'm okay... and was able to totally get it tight with more grease and less friction. I think I spelled that right... they also built the rest of it, cables... everything and fixed my bent derailluer hanger ( bent in 2 ways.)
And frame was powdercoated professionally by Chopper builder Here in Portland oregon that will powdercoat a frame and a fork all for $100 bones. Yeah it's matt black and super durable. I love it. I now have a stealth bike... I'll post a photo of it done when I get home later.
Thanks guys for your input. It always helps.
