Convert a "stock" Surly LHT Question

I'm trying to find the cheepest way to replace my custom build Long Haul Trucker. It had Tiagra STI shifters that I really like better than the bar ends that come on the complete bike that Surly sells.

What components would I need to switch out if I were to do this? Obviously the shifters...Do I need to switch out the deraillers too?

Shift Levers
Shimano Bar-end
SL-BS77 9-speed

Front Derailleur
Shimano Tiagra
FD-4403 triple

Rear Derailleur
Shimano XT
RD-M761 SGS long cage

It should be an easy straight conversion. Nothing else really needs replacing as far as your drivetrain components.
If you're running V-brakes you'll need travel agents with the STI's.

Ah yes...forgot about the trusty travel agent. I had those on my first LHT (RIP my friend).

G'day

Would the Tiagra shifters pull the Shimano MTB RD? I suspect that might not be the case from what I have read.

Regards
Andrew

It is the same .5 to 1 cable pull so I dont see why it would not work. I believe this is the stock set up on the Bianchi cross bike.

Okay. I have summarised some discussions from the Surly LHT owners group amongst other places which suggested otherwise, but if it could be as simple as a Tiagra or I guess a 105 shifter change that would be great.

Will have to look at the Bianchi cross bike specification.

Andrew

Looks more promising. Thanks for the heads-up jonestr. The Bianchi 2008 Axis appears to have the desired set-up.

G'day

One question. The Bianchi Axis has a 11/32 cluster whereas the LHT has a 11/34 cluster. Would Tiagra STI still provide the right amount of pull for the 34T cluster?

Regards
Andrew

Yes. Shifter pulls the derailer laterally a fixed distance, not dependent on the size of the cluster.
