I'm looking to build/buy a steel framed commuter and haved focused in on bikes like the surley cc, soma double and a few others. I have ridden a kona paddy wagon and while I know I need a few gears I don't need many. It has me wondering if I could get the paddy wagon frame and have a nexus hub gear installed. Would this work without a lot of crazy modifications besides buying the right pieces? Thanks!
It is relatively simple to do, once you have the wheel built, Sheldon Brown, bless his heart, did practically the same thing with a Bianchi San Jose. If you want to do a flat or riser bar the shifter looks a little better, IMO, but the gripshift-as-a-barend mode is actually very easy and intuitive.
Thanks enigmagic. I've checked out sheldon's san jose but didn't know the san jose was a single speed. I'm a newbie when it comes to frames and wasn't sure if a ss frame could take the width of the hub gear wheel or if I would have problems mounting the wheel due to the different drop outs. So you don't think I will have a clearance or drop out problem?
