Newbie Disc Brake Question

I have a 3-year old Giant Cypress hybrid, with mechanical disc brakes, that has only been ridden 100 miles (99 in the last week).

The problem I am having is that the rear (disc) brake lever has become mushy and the cable is so loose that it comes out of the track on the frame when I hang up the bike.

I looked at the caliper in the back and see an adjustment nut that the cable goes through. I know that cable stretching is common with a new bike. Can I just loosen this nut and tighten the cable up or am I looking at doing a full brake adjustment, pads and all?

I’m trying to learn how to do all the maintenance myself. Biking has become so popular in my area that most of the LBS's are at about 3 weeks for even minor service.

Thanks

Chad

Loosen the bolt. Take up the cable slack and re-tighten the bolt. TEST. You should be fine. Try these sites for learning.
