Rethreading quill bolt?

I had forgotten that there was a bike mechanics category after I posted in the singlespeed/fixed forum. I figured this would be a more ideal place to post. I apologize in advance if this was covered already. Anyways, I need to trim a good portion of the quill on my stem in order for it to fit properly in my frame. (as you can see in the pic) However, I took it out to do some measuring and see where I would have to cut it to have it fit and it seems that the bolt isn't threaded where I would need it to be threaded. Is it possible to rethread the bolt with a die? I have a buddy who owns a shop and has the right tools to do so but have any of you guys done this before? Rethread the bolt that connects to the wedge?

Thanks guys,

Don't think I'd be willing to do that for myself, never mind recommending someone else do it.
If you can't find a compatible shorter quill bolt, I'd suggest just replacing the stem.

It shouldn't be a problem as long as the bolt has cut threads. If it has rolled threads, then no. But that is a nice looking stem in a nice long height like I have been looking for.

yeah, somebody filled me in with a little info on cut threads and rolled threads. hopefully, the LBS has those bolts tomorrow.. :(

Wasn't this covered, like, Monday?

Are the threads, in fact, rolled? If you checked and they are, then yeah, you'd need to replace the bolt. Or, I suppose, roll new threads if maybe you know someone with a machine shop.

If they're cut, go at it with a die.

Or, get a new stem and give me that nice long one. :D

think i may just sell it and try to get a shorter stem..$45 brand new nitto deluxe, 80mm reach, 26.0 clamp. somebody take this off of me :(

I've extended the threads on on a quil stem bolt before ad it worked fine. As long as the die is sharp, you should get good threads. (I think it is 8m x 1.25) Just test its fit and strength befre you ride it.
