I have turned my '95 Cannondale into a commuter and attempted to add a bike rack for panniers on the rear.
However, it seems this frame is too wide for multiple types of bike racks (i.e. the braze-on eyelets can't be reached by the rack without severely bending the rack stays). I tried a couple different racks to no avail.
Can't figure out if this particular bike is just "wider" than other models or I'm doing something stupid - I could have sworn that I've seen racks on Cannondale's before. Does anyone else have experience with this?

What model Cannondale? If it's an MTB or hybrid with 135 mm dropouts, some racks made for road bikes with 130 mm dropouts may have to be stretched or bent to fit. An MTB or hybrid may also have fatter seatstays so the upper mounting arms could have the same problem.

There are "MTB" racks that may fit better.

THanks, HillRider, I think that is the problem. I've never seen "MTB racks", I'll have to look for some.

I have a M500 of that era. I bought a Cannondale rack when I purchased it, but any rack made for 26 wheels should work.

I have an F500 that I have the same problem with. I bought a MTB specific rack and still had to stretch it to fit. I also had to custom make a support to attach the rack to the seat stay as the one that came with the rack was too short and made the rack tip too far forward.

They must be just BIG frames. But, it does make a great commuter!
