Is this OK way to mount bottle cage?
 

I don't know what these things are really used for or how they're called, they work sort of like cable ties, only made of metal and screw-operated. :) But most importantly I don't know how to get rid of now-unused threaded part of them (it's sharp) in such a way that I'd be able to unscrew them if necessary.

They are called hose clamps. I hope you used stainless steel ones. You can cut the extra part with tin snips. File or grind away the sharp edge, and when you cut it, it will leave a sharp edge. I'm not quite sure if you can reuse them if you take them off after cutting them. So have extras.
You can also try to find ones that have a plastic cap thet goes over the end, of paint on some plastic-dip, made to coat tool handles. They will hold the water bottle fine.

They are usually called "radiator clamps" or "hose clamps" and are common items. Any hardware, home or automotive parts store has them in a bunch of sizes. Yes they work fine.

The excess strap can be cut off with a hacksaw or sharp side cutter pliers and the sharp edge and corners filed smooth. You will still be able to remove them.

It's a good idea to protect the frame, as you have done. A thin strip cut from an old bike inner tube works well for this too.

Well, those were just quick snaps made in a place that isn't exactly lit like a studio :) I usually do better than that. :(

Back when Ben Serotta was building bikes in the back of his father's hardware store in Saratoga Springs, I saw a cage attached that way to his personal cyclocross bike. So it's OK.

OK, but these clamps can put tremendous pressure on the frame tube. Don't overtighten them.

Using hose clamps as a custom mount is a good idea. Thanks for sharing that.

I agree, but it does look like the OP has used some form of tape to protect the frame (the blue bands), this will also hold the hose clamp in place with no need to overtighten.

There are bottle cage mount straps out there that do the same thing, but are lighter and a bit cleaner.
I've got a drawer full of old chrome ones at work.

Yeah, Blackburn, among others, used to make them. However, they were sized to fit "standard" diameter steel frames and I don't recall any of them large enough to fit newer "oversize" tubing. Hose clamps can be made to fit anything, even non-round tubes, if you are careful how you tighten them.

Zefal Gizmos are still available, though perhaps not as sturdy as hose clamps.
