Nashbar Dual Pivot Brake Reach
 

Hey everyone, I'm replacing the old single-pivot sidepull brakes on a bunch of road bikes from the 80's, and I want to use these cheap dual-pivots from Nashbar. http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...0Road%20Brakes

(I'll measure the mounting hole to rim distance later.) Does anyone have experience with upgrading from 80's era sidepull to newer dual-pivot? The wheels are 27" with no fenders. I'd guess the Nashbar brakes are short reach- they would mention the fact if they were "long" reach. They're actually Nashbar-brand Tektro brakes, so you can get similar calipers from Bike Tools Etc.:

Short reach probably won't fit- 80's bikes were usually long reach, which means you need these:

I put "long" reach Shimano 600 (single-pivot, pre-Ultegra) on an '80's Schwinn Letour that I converted to single speed and straight bars. They work fine, and it's a great errand bike.

Nashbar offers their house brand (aka Tektro) dp brakes in a "long reach" version too. Here is the URL:

I have them on my circa 1987 Nashbar Race SIS bike. Just upgraded from the original Shimano 600EX single pivot side-pull brakes. I can go stick the digital calipers on the brakeset, or grab the tape measure.
brakes work well, by the way. very well for $20/pair.

with the carbon fork upgrade though, I'm wondering if I should have gotten the black "jail brake" versions instead.

Hey GlassWolf, thanks for the offer. Yes, I'm curious as to what the reach is on those Nashbar silver/"jail brake" calipers. Even though I could buy the Nashbar "long reach" set for $13 more, I'd rather save if I can.

Black parts match well with carbon, but in general, I don't like dark components since it's hard to tell if there's grease and grime on them.

I'm getting 2" from center of mounting bolt to center of pad nut at farthest extension away from the mount bolt.

Short reach brakes are almost always adjustable from 37 to 47 mm from the center of the brake bolt to the center of the rim's brake track. Long reach brakes cover the range of 47 to 57 mm.

If you are measuring 2" exactly, that's 50.8 mm or in the range of long reach brakes.

Drilling out the fork crown is easy. What are you planning to do with the rear brakes?

For the rear, I'm assuming that I can use the longer bolt from the front brake while substituting the appropriate washers and nut for the recessed nut.

On the front, after drilling out the fork crown, I'll be using an extra-long recessed nut.

Cool! I bought a 105 brake caliper a year or so ago. It came with about 4 recessed nuts of various lengths. I've got the long ones around here somewhere. I'd be willing to let one go if you PM me with an address, but it sounds like you need more than one.

I've been working on upgrading the bike, but it's one thing at a time.

I bought the nashbar long reach dual pull road brakes. Less than thirty bucks with discount. apparently my gitane road bike does not have recessed brakes. I think I can use the sheldon brown method of front on back and vice versa. the nut and washer off the old weinman brakes seems like they will work for mounting the new longer bolt brake in the rear.

I have mounted the short bolt brake in front by putting the 5mm allen wrench thru the brake hole in the back of the fork as mentioned in the above referenced sheldon brown instructions. The recessed bolt can then be tightened to hold the brake on. no drilling required.

Haven't got this done yet but this is my plan. Any advise or comments?

Do I need to turn the brake pads around as the arrowed grooves are now going in the opposite direction of what they would have been if the brakes were mounted normally?

This thread was a great deal of help to figure out how the new nashbar brakes could be mounted.

When I bought the new brakes I had hoped they would work for me did not know the difference between recessed and nutted brakes, but I know now.
