Campy conversion from C Record cranks to Centaur Compact?
I just picked up a nice late 80's Merckx bike that came with Record 10.. The only odd item was the older C Record Crankset. It shifts just fine even with the 10 speed group but I was thinking that using the same BB, would it be possible to put a Centaur Compact crankset on the same BB which is 111 spindle length?
I know I have to pull a few links off the chain and drop the FD, which looks like it will be easy to do.
Has anyone done this?

Centaur used 111m axles so that should be no problem.
The FD might be an issue as it is not a CT der. I have seen them both work, and be problematic. Is your current FD a clamp-on or braze-on or is it a braze-on bolted to a clamp? This could make a difference as well. The Shimano clamps (or those designed for Shimano) can sometimes cause the tail of the FD to kick up a bit and this can also affect shifting.

fd is a braze on, it has a good 1/2 of inch to go down, so I may just get the cranks and try it. If it becomes an issue I will get a Compact specific FD..

Was the Centaur compact available for a square taper bottom bracket or only introduced after UT?

and on sale at Performance for 69.95. Wow. https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...slisearch=true
https://www.lickbike.com/productpage.aspx?PART_NUM_SUB='0050-70' although you may have trouble finding one with alloy crankarms - the aforementioned item has carbon arms.

Pretty straightforward upgrade.. Pulled the cranks, made sure that the bb was 111 spindle length.. Installed the cranks, put pedals back on..
My only concern was the braze on FD would not go low enough, but no issues there.. It shifts fine, I think a compact specific FD would be a little quicker on small to Big ring transitions. Had to re-adjust cable tension a little bit..
I had to take about 4 links out of the chain, installed a campy quick link and was done..
