Running Large Cassette on Road Bike ?

Has anyone tried this 9 speed setup for climbing? Standard 53-39 up front, 11-30 cassette, Dura ace 7700 GS mechanical with the 13 tooth jockey wheels? I do not want to convert to a compact. Thanks!

You may need to scrounge around a hardware store to find a slightly longer B-screw, but it can work. I've seen it done, just not done it myself.

Another trick is to completely remove the B-screw and reinstall it backwards. The head will give you a few additional millimeters effective length.

I made a 13-28 to use when I climb in the Blue Ridge. No problems on a couple of different frames. Chain length won't be an issue because you most likely won't be in the big/big combo. So long as you can keep the RD off the larger cog, you're groovy

D/A GS vs. Ultegra GS ?

Yes, i also run a 28 and short cage but that seems to be the very absolute limit with this setup. The D/A 7700 GS has the large 13 tooth pulleys to take up extra chain. My concern is that those same large pulleys will be in conflict with a larger 30 tooth cog. Would an Ultegra GS be a better solution with it's 11 tooth pulleys? This is probably one of those things i will just have to set up & try.

I'm running a 13-30 cassette with 53-39 chainrings and an Ultegra short cage RD without problem.
