Running Dura-Ace 7402 in 9-Speed?

An old triathalete I know told me he used to run his DA 7402 RD with 9-Speed bar-ends (7700/7400 I'm guessing) and a 9-speed DA cassette with no problems at all. Consequently, the 9-speed DA bar-end shifters are also the bar-end shifters to use in 8-speed for DA 7402.

I just acquired some DA 7402 RD stuff and I have and old 9-speed DA casette so I might as well as gain a gear (2 actually) and save some money by not buying an 8-speed casette and use both.

Has anyone tried this?

I haven't tried it myself with that specific RD, but I'm sure it will work just fine. Most of the time you can get away with it unless the RD has a abnormally small range. Some older model RD pulleys might have extra play in the upper pulley compared to, say 10spd RD's since 10spd uses narrower gear spacing. I say it will work flawlessly.

The 9s bar-ends are supposed to shift the old 74xx RD in 8s mode (4.8mm cog spacing). It's not designed to shift in that RD in 9s (4.34mm) cog spacing. Are you sure your friend was running a 9s cassette w/9s spacers in there? I'm thinking his memory is hazy.

The RD-74xx will move too far per shift to work well for 9-speed. You may be able to get it to work OK on 3 or so of the middle cogs and the high/low derailer stops will make it work OK for the first and last cog, but the other cogs may not work so well. I tried on my bike but I was not satisfied with the result so I picked up a used RD-7700 on eBay.

I believe that if you switch the bar end shifters to friction mode, you can use them on any number of cogs in the rear.

Ah , I forgot 7400 is the weird group. Search around on Sheldons site, he has a diagram of an alternative cable routing for 7400 era DA RD. Just by affixing the cable in a slightly different fashion, you can adjust the pull ratio of the RD and get it to act just like "regular" ratio RD's. Simple, effective, costless.

-edit-

Maybe not. Heres sheldons page explaining it all: Shimano Dura-Ace Compatibility

Oh bloody hell!

Will it be that bad to have 8-speeds instead of 9? Yes, yes it will. For I love the number 9, especially over it's younger sibling 8 (because the weakling was eaten by that jerk 7).
