9 Speed Friction Shifting
I use a friction thumbshifter for my 8 cog/ one chainring setup. Would 9 work ok too ? I know I need to buy a nine speed chain and make sure the chain fits on the chainring and derailleur pulleys.

I haven't tried it but I know someone who did. She says the shifting is finicky because the cogs are so close together. If you aren't careful you will double shift. But once you get used to the feel it is OK.

Hi,
30 years ago, I had a Schwinn Varsity. Nice bike. You know, 8 speed is pretty good stuff. I wonder if there was another upgrade (or even start saving for a new bike) that shouldn't have a higher priority.

i run a 9-speed friction. it actually shifts better then the original 5 speed, with the same shifters, but an XT rear mech, XT cassette, and sram chain
