Cane Creek IS-2 Integrated Headset, 1 1/8"
 

I would like to install this headset in my carbon fork, aluminum bike. It has a threadless integrated headset and wish to upgrade to the Cane Creek IS-2.
The first part to be installed, under frame head tube,:innocent: is "crown Race" and on top of that a cartridge bearing. The instruction sheet mentions a crown race installation tool to press flat surface flush with the fork crown. Not having disassembled anything yet I was wondering if there is already a crown race installed that I can leave in place or must I secure this installation tool.
Would appreciate any and all help.

Unless your original crown race was removed, it's probably still on there. That doesn't mean that it interfaces with the cartridge bearing of the IS-2 though.

Crown races can be installed, and likely removed, without a crown race installation tool. On the steel fork I bought for my commuter bike, I used a brass punch to carefully tap the race down onto the fork until fully seated. This was a new fork so I did not have to remove an old race.

On the carbon fork for my road bike, the crown race was aluminum and had a slit in it. I was able to press the crown race in place by hand. This fork had a carbon steerer which may be why the race was split (headset came with the frame/fork).

If you are getting rid of the old crown race and don't wish to save it, use a brass punch to carefully tap it off the shoulder on the fork. Any damage you cause to the race won't be a big deal though you'll likely not leave a scratch. Carefully install the new one with light taps working your way around the race to make sure it's going on evenly. Check your headset tightness after your first few rides and make sure your tension adjustment is still in spec.

This was my concern also....will the existing one match-up with the new crown race....this is my Memorial Day challenge.

Another thought would be, if the crown race is not the same size as the new one, just leave it in place with the existing cartridge bearing. I would add the new components on the top of the head tube....doing things half-way is not my way, so maybe a trip to the lbs is in my future.
