Lubricating Speed-Play pedals

To lubricate Speed Play pedals, you have to remove a little screw on the end, inject the grease until it starts coming out around the pedal axle near the crank arm, and then put the screw back in.

Speed Play sells some sort of little pre-filled injector, filled with a tiny amount of grease for some exorbanant price for use on their pedals.

The following works great:

Get a run-of-the-mill 5 cc. or 10 cc. LUER LOCK syringe from your doctor's office the next time you get a check up or flu shot. Just ask the nurse for one. It's what every doctor's office and hosital in the USA uses for injections. They cost the office like 2 cents. Fill it with grease. The LUER LOCK tip fits right into the grease hole in the pedal. Inject until it comes out the other side and you're done.

Cost: a few pennies. I buy grease in the pound tub sizes at the auto supply store and it takes me about 20 years to go through a pound on my bikes.

Don't worry about bankrupting the US medical system by using medical syringes for non-medical purposes. Insurance company CEO's are getting paid hundreds of millions a year each to sit on their fat asses.

From an MD-biker-dude.

Great idea. You could also use the syringe to apply a bead of grease to hub and headset bearing races during overhauls too.

I use a Duelco refillable grease gun (available from Bike Tools Etc. among others) to inject grease into my Frogs and as a general purpose grease applicator. It's not as cheap as the syringe though.
