Truing stand recommendations
Looks like I'm going to have to build my first wheel due to the lack of wheelbuilders in my area. I'm looking for a good truing stand that won't cost too much. I see Park sell one for ~250 euro but I was hoping to get one a bit cheaper than that. Thanks!

The park TS-2 is $160 USD online which is like 104 euros.

Spin Doctor/Minura less than 50 USD. It works.

+1 on the Performance Spin Doctor, though I don't know if you can get it on your side of the pond.

I bought the spin doctor then upgraded it for like 2 bucks... http://www.instructables.com/id/Buil...g-stand-for-l/
it kicks ass now |

For one wheel just use a front fork held in a vise with some C-clamps and a rule.
There are some threads here with plans for inexpensive home built truing stands. |

That Instructable is really great. Unfortunately, it's great because the Spin Doctor stand isn't.
I'd much prefer a stand with a self-centering caliper, myself. |

Yeah, I thought the Minoura stand was self-centering and built / trued several wheels based on that assumption, only to find out that it's not really and doesn't have a dishing gauge. It's still cheap, though!

We have park TS2's at the shop, I use an inverted road fork at home with a few zip ties and a dial indicator, and am rather partial to the old Hozan stand we have at the shop.

The instructable is interesting - my Minoura came with that hardware! I'm shocked the newer ones don't have bolts. Interesting.

http://www.roseversand.de/output/con...10&detail2=614 http://www.roseversand.de/output/imp...3/493224_1.jpg €49 with spoke key and dishing gauge: http://www.roseversand.de/output/con...10&detail2=443 It is cheap, good enough and easy to stove away when not in use. Part Tool's TS-2 is nice, but it won't make your wheels better. Building good wheels is a question of good knowledge, not expensive tools. Get this book by Jobst Brandt on how to build wheels: http://www.amazon.com/Bicycle-Wheel-...3645286&sr=1-1 Buy it from the US, since the UK price on the book is four times the price (£55) of the US price ($25) As a slightly cheaper alternative Roger Musson's e-book is OK, but Brandt is better: http://www.wheelpro.co.uk/wheelbuilding/book.php (Edit:-->) Just found the new Minoura True Pro for €63: http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k47...rstaender.html http://www.bike-discount.de/pictures/big/16603.jpg -- Regards |
