Triple FD work for Double Crank?

I'm trying to get my drivetrain all Ultegra and I found a good price on an unused triple 6503 FD. Will it work with a double 39/53 Crank?

Thanks in advance.

As I told my ..wife way back when: People have different levels of tolerance. Don't expect me to adopt yours and I won't expect you to adopt mine. If you think the sink is dirty, then clean it; don't ***** at me for not cleaning it.

To answer your question directly, the triple FD won't work as well as the double FD on that double. Whether it works well enough is strictly up to you.

It will make the shifts but the "trim" function might not work--the derailleur will get the half-click, half-move, but the contours inside the cage of the derailleur aren't located right to clear the chain as you would probably want it to.

Shimano rates the maximum large chainring of the 6503 at 52T. You can probably push that to 53 with no issues, esp. considering:

I can't find the mid-large minimimum difference spec for the 6503. You would want that to be 14T or less so that the inner plate clears the 39T when you are on the 53T.

As others have said, the triple will be fussier to trim.

The DA triple FD on our tandem handles a 54-42-30 range with only occasionally
throwing the chain off the 54 to the outside.

I guess I'll find out. I'm installing DA bar end shifters in friction mode for the front so indexing is not an issue.

It may work but not as well as the proper double. Why punish yourself?
