General Maintenance Question...

Just purchased a 2008 Scott Speedster S20. Spent a lot of money (for me at least), and would like to keep things running smooth with minimal time in the shop. I have little bike wrenching knowlege, but I'm willing / eager to learn.

My question is... If I'm doing about 100 - 150 miles / week, what general daily, weekly, or monthly maintenance can I do to keep things in good overall shape?

Any response or opinions are appreciated.

I would make sure everything stays tight and oiled. Check your wheels every once in a while to see if it needs to be trued. I've found that cleaning the whole bike every 500 miles makes it work really smooth. For example...cleaning the casset and free wheels, chain. There's a little something.

Clean and lube your chain and cassette once a week. Do the chain rings every other week. bk

Unless u live in an highly humid environment, nothing.

"Listen" to your bike, it will tell u whether it needs attention.

p.s.: oh and my advice don't apply if yer talking MTB and ALOT of dirt road riding.

good post.

I live in las Vegas, so it's dry as a bone. Right now Ive been using Dupont Spray lube, the wax based..5 bucks a can and was highly regarded by some.

Someone on here said you need to re grease everything every few months??? I don't see why, unless you spray water in the hubs, crank. I think in the east coast and southern states this would be ideal..but in desert..probably not so much no?

I've seen your flash floods on T.V. SCARY!

When very hot, keep bike indoors will help. Just like a car, keeping your ride garaged makes a whole lot of difference.

A grease isn't just "grease", it's a composite of several different substances of various volatility. As time goes by the more volatile components will evaporate, leaving the remaining gunk harder and and harder, and less able to do its job of lubricating the moving parts. There are other degrading processes too that'll happen to the grease as it's exposed to heat and ageing.
It's a very gradual process, so trying to determine an exact regreasing interval would be quite pointless. But for the time it takes and the results it gives once a year seems like a reasonable balance to me.
