Thinking about going to 10 speed need help.

it helps me to understand components in general better if I ask this:
First of all I'm not sure if the current shimano sora is a 8 or 9 speed but for now I"m going to consider it an 8 speed.
If I want to make the jump from an 8 speed bike (which let's assume has all sora components) to a 10 speed bike (by replacing with say, Shimano 105 components),
What are the LEAST components of my shimano sora I have to replace? If I switch to a 10 speed, do I have to replace only in my guess, the rear deraulier, cassette, and chain? OR do I have to replace ALL THE SORA COMPONENTS?
I hope it make sense.

At a minimum you would need new 10-speed shifters, cassette, and chain. This assumes you are going from a double crankset to a double crankset. If a triple is involved it may get more complicated.
In nearly all cases it would be better to buy a complete 105 bike than to spend the money on an upgrade conversion.

Just to replace your Sora crankset, just about any road crank - with the appropriate BB - would do. You could also replace the bent chainrings individually, though that might cost almost as much as a new crankset.

Silly me, at first I thought you wanted to go back to a 5 x 2 setup like the old days.... 
I do believe that the new 10 speed setups fit the 10 thinner and closer spaced cogs into the same space as the old 8 or 9 speed setups. If not then you'll need a new freehub. Assuming they do then your present derailleur has enough travel with no issue. However you will need a new 10 speed brifter or bar end shifter depending on what setup you want to use. Also you'll need a new narrow 10 rear speed compatible chain.
The derailleur may or my not need replacing. If it does then it will be due to the idler wheels being narrower to fit the 10 speed chain rather than a travel issue since the 10 cogs are within the same travel range as the old 9 speed setup.
