Need to replace Shimano Derailleur

I road bike mostly but my son wants to use my mountain bike for riding the roads, to get in shape mostly for football. Only problem is my mountain bike needs a new derailleur, cheapo on it now is shot.
Shimano C050, 7 spd, searched online and it dosen't look to be available anywhere.....any thoughts on a suitable replacement? Thanks,

Tim

Just about anything will work, but check that the claw hanger isn't integral to the RD. If it is you'll need an adapter or an RD with a claw.

DMF, I think the claw hanger is a part of the RD. In looking at different RD's it seems most 9Spd's say they'l also work for a 7 is that true? The bike is a Pacific but its a good frame, cheap components for now but maybe I should build it up a little as I'd like to use it more? Anyone recommend a better RD to start with?

Almost any Shimano mountain rear derailleur will work, with a claw adapter...

However, check out the TX50 for $14.50 which will work just fine for any 7 speed Shimano mountain bike.

I believe Loose Screws also sells claw adapters if you want to go with a higher end RD as well.

In my opinion, a higher end RD is not likely to give you much improvement on a 7 speed cluster, although it may save you an ounce or so in weight.
