FB shifters with road bits?

I assume Shimano 7 speed Tourney or their other 7/8s Flatbar shifters will operate the 7/8s road ders properly right?

I've heard of it being done before, but wanted to ask all you gurus to make sure.

As to indexing, all Shimano rear derailleurs (except pre-9 speed Dura Ace) are compatible. However, front derailleurs differentiate between road and MTB/flat-bar. If the front shifter is friction, it should work with any front derailleur.

Back in the days before Shimano saw fit to produce flat bar road shifters lots of flat bar equipped tandems and some hybrids used rapid fire indexed shifters and road group front derailleurs. My wife has a hybrid that's equipped that way. It indexes just fine on the front.
