Sturmey Archer cable pull for fudging compatibility
 

I just built of a wheel with a Sturmey Archer hub (1962 — thanks, Dad!) and am slowly accumulating parts to build a bike around it. However, the Sturmey Archer shifter lever options are butt.

What's the cable pull on the S-A hubs? The dude at JTek Engineering had said that he was working on a Shiftmate cam to make them compatible with other shifters, but I haven't heard anything about it in months.

I also seem to remember seeing someone using a different shifter without ill effect, but I can't find it now.

Any advice or measurements? (I'm pretty sure friction mode is out because of the required precision, but I guess I'd like to hear success stories about that, too.)

9/32" from high overdrive to middle direct drive gear. 3/16" from middle gear to low underdrive gear.

That's exactly what I was afraid of. What's the margin of error on those? There's obviously some play.

Get a SA lever (the old ones are better) and call it done.

Actually, that is, I don't think they'll fit a moustache bar, which is what I want to use.

Just use a longer clamp bolt.

what screw size is this part? It's not #6, #8 or M4. M4 will screw on but the thread pitch is not the same one I can find at the hardware store.
the nut used on the cable anchor doesn't seem to be the original one as it's too loose. threads don't seem to be stripped, it's just the nut is one size too large.

Knowing SA probably a BSF or Whitworth thread originally. I suggest that you get a complete new clamp assembly. That way the nut and bolt are guaranteed to match. My brother still has a nice set of Craftsman Whitworth wrenches and sockets.

Years ago even Metric had national variations. The French and Japanese both had so called metric threads which did not match ISO pitch standards. Early Honda motorcycles used JIS Metric fasteners only normally available at Honda Motorcycle dealers.

Remember too that SA was owned by Raleigh and they used non standard threads on bottom brackets and headsets making it a PITA for current restorers of older Raleigh bicycles.

If not Harris Cyclery does, either separately or as part of a complete new cable assembly as I recall. Or try "Bike Tools Etc."

Not sure about Canada but very few LBSs in the states have SA parts.

I ran that phrase through the universal translator but didn't get anything useful.

We're talking about a S-A three-speed hub, right?

Sturmey currently offers their DLS30 "Rapid Fire" style push-push shifter, their TSS33 and TSS31 twist shifters, their OSS30 push button up/trigger down shifter, their SLS3C classic trigger and SLS3N modern styled trigger. They have announced their SLS30B bar-end shifter and their SLS30T thumb shifter, but no availability date has been published.

If none of this will do, all you really need with a Sturmey three is to set 2nd gear - first is cable taut and 3rd is cable slack. You could do this with almost any indexed shifter, including brifters, by establishing a particular shift position as aligned 2nd gear.
