Slipping front derailleur cable
After several weeks of slow loosening, I have discovered that the barrel adjuster next to the brifter is slowly turning clockwise over time. The barrel adjuster has been matched with the stop notches, so that is not the problem.
What is the solution to this besides electrical tape? TIA.

Those notches are curved (not worn though, since the bike is only a month old) so they don't provide absolute resistance against turning. Going over bumps and such jolts everything I guess.

hello
With proper cable tension it shouldn't do that. Besides, it's sprung so I can't see how it can turn by itself.......unless your riding buddies are messing with you...

I'm a commuter, and the only thing I need to worry about are messenger guys smoking me.
Yes, it does turn. I've seen it in the groove at one moment and out the next, so I know that it is moving. I guess I should get REI to replace the barrel?

I just rode over there 20 minutes ago, and they replaced the inner cable and adjuster barrel. We'll see. They're stand up.

You might want to make sure that the cable housing and ferrule isn't jammed in there so tight that when you turn the adjuster, it twists the housing around as well. This just winds up the housing with spring tension that will try to force the adjuster back to its old position over time. I find it helpful to relax the cable tension and then pull the housing and ferrule clear before making any adjustments.

I am thinking about bottoming out the adjuster so it can't turn anymore, and then adjust the derailleur at the cable bolt. Assuming I can get it right, I won't have to adjust it ever.
