Crackling Tubulars
Good evening folks.
I'm running some Vittoria Crono EVO CS 20mm tires on Mavic GEL280 rims with Continental cement.
One coat of glue on the new tire and 2 coats on the rim 24 hours apart and then the mounting coat on the rim.
Its the same way I've done Conti Sprinters with out problems for years.
Let the tires dry for 24.
When I ride they make a rice krispie crackling. I pulled the tires off and put one more coat on the tire and another mounting coat on the rim and they still make noise.
Rim to wide for a 20mm tire? Should I find a wider light weight tire?
Its for my dedicated hill climber.

It sounds like your process is right. But it sounds like to me your using old bonding and/or there is inadequate glue on the bond.

OK..... but what do you do for the way down that really big hill that apparently dominates your daily route from the time you leave your driveway.....

Is it actually krispy krackling sounds, like running over egg-shells? Or is a more dull roar ripping-fabric sound? The more supple casing of tubulars tend to cause higher-frequency sounds that may throw a lot of people off. I had a set of 110gm sprint-tyres once and the 1st time I rode them, I thought they were ripping or rolling off. Luckily I pulled off on the 1st warm-up lap and still had a spare lap left in them.

DannoXYZ, Its kind of like a Velcro sound. It got much worse after a shakedown/training ride up a 1.3 mile 13% grade.
On the way down when I let off the brakes it got disturbingly loud from the rear tire. The rims were hot but not more then in past years when I used Continental Sprinters. (never had these troubles with the sprinters)
The Vittoria is 170 grams.......
I'm doing the Newtons Revenge race up Mt Washington on Saturday and I'm torn about what wheels to use.
My heavy training wheels have Sprinters on them. The light wheels talk to me. Its to late to glue up some new tires.
I think the poor contact illustration on the Park tubular page shows my situation.
