Rhyno Lite rims are the standard to which other rims are compared for dirt jumping. They are relatively affordable too. Not the easiest rim to install tires on.

I don't have much experience with MTB stuff, but why haven't they moved to deep section rims for increased strength? Weight penalty?

Dunno. Velocity Aero Heat is another pretty tough mountain bike rim. It has a semi-aero section but I don't know anybody who has used them for an extensive period of time. My sons, on the other hand, have done some serious drop offs with Rhyno Lites so that's where my experience lies.

Since the typical MTB rim is much wider, the resultant peak would be huge. In all honesty, I think a well constructed box rim with cross bracing would be as strong if not stronger than a deep section rim.

If the spokes are bent the rim probably is too.

Deep section rims would have more rigidity, that's true. But you'd sacrifice the flexibility that is needed to survive the big landings and impacts that would dent or kink a more rigid rim. This is why even the far wider and more serious DH rims are still fairly flat sections. The idea is let the spokes do the work they were intended for and use the rims to hold the spokes in place and serve as a spot to mount the tire.

For casual trail and moderate jumping you can't go wrong with Rhyno Lites. They even used to stand up well to the big drops if the rider landed it well. For the other times where it's a near crash then the new more beefy rims are a better call. At least that's what the big drop guys around here switch over to.
