would this work?
On my older bike i'm thinking of changing the gearing to 1x6, it's currently 3x6. if i take off the front deraileur, and the bottom two chainrings, will my chain stay on just the one chainring?

It would be better to take the bottom two chainrings off then move the largest ring to the centre position; you will probably also need to buy a set of short chainring bolts as the old ones will probably be too long for mounting just one chainring.
The middle position of a triple crank will give a better chainline than the outside position.

The chain will stay on, but it seems you might have rather high gearing. Can't say more without knowing the gears involved, terrain and speed you typically go.

the gearing isn't the issue, i never used more of the gears than what would be left on it. i just needed to make sure the chain wasn't going to continuously fall off. the bike is an old Backtrax (i think this was an x-mart bike in the 90's) that i got at an auction for $10, and it has become my project.
