How much of a problem is this?

My '08 Lemond Reno w/ TruVativ ISIS splined BB is either loose or bad. I noticed the chain rubbing on the FD a couple days ago and today noticed that there is side to side play. I have already bought an Ultegra gruppo for this bike and it should arrive within the week and it will probably be a day or two before I can get it changed out. It isn't an excessive amount of side to side play but it is noticeable when I'm spinning more. If I take it in to the LBS it will probably be a warranty issue but I don't want to lose any ride time if I don't need to. Odds are that I will be putting at least 200 miles on the bike before I get the gruppo changed out.

What are your thoughts? Should I just bite the bullet and take it in even though I'm changing it in the next 10 days? The bike has about 875 miles on it but it wasn't noticeable until about 3 or 4 days ago.

Are you sure it's the bottom bracket? Perhaps a crank bolt that attaches to the BB is loose--if that's the case, you can tighten it, but chances are the arm will be shot.

It's the BB. The crank bolts are tight. When I pull on the left crank arm the right one moves too.

If the bottom bracket is not screwed in properly, you stand a chance of damaging the threads in the frame. I would get it fixed or replaced before that much riding.

And if it turns out that the BB is screwed in right then the BB bearings are failing FAST. You may not make it for another 200 miles. They usually make growly noises for weeks before they develop serious play. If you had no warning signs then it's not just wear. Something failed in there.

Since you've got a new setup coming in I'd say it's time to invoke the N+1 rule and buy a spare bike to cover you off for the week....

Now I like the way you think!!!!! I just need to convince the wife I've had it all along .

I'll run by the LBS in the morning. I'd rather avoid a catastrophic failure 30 miles from home.
