threaded quil fork -> normal fork + stem?

I have an aluminum frame with a quill stem and a threaded headset. When I upgrade the fork, can I go with an unthreaded steerer if I replace the stem/headset? Will the frame take a normal headset?

Bikes: 2005 Specialized Sirrus Hybrid, Unpedigreed steel frame fixie conversion (Force Disorder Pump), Pugeot UO9 fixed conversion (Red Menace). Lots of parts scattered about garage.

Yes, you can.

And as you are aware, you will need to replace all threaded headset associated parts with threadless (or Ahead-set) parts. (ie upper & lower races, fork crown race, etc.)
The only caveat is to know what size you are starting with - either 1" or 1 1/8" - I'm lead to believe finding 1" threadless parts is getting more difficult.

Ask your LBS or bike-savvy friends for what's involved.

I agree, 1" is getting harder to find new. If it were me, I'd measure how high I have my current quill stem at. You realize that threadless has less adjustment than a quill. If you ride with your bars high you might not be able to duplicate that position with a threadless. Measure first and buy once. Good luck
