Using 8 sp cassette with 6 sp friction

Can I use an 8 speed cassette with a rear friction DR originally used on a 6 sp cassette. Since the 8 sp is much newer, the overall width isnt that much more than the 6 sp. If I jsut adjust my limit screws accordingly do you guys think this will work? The original component is a Shimano Tourney DR and the new casette is a Shimano deore.

I'm using my 6-speed SunTour Cyclone friction RD with a new 8-speed cassette, with absolutely no problems. I did have to ever-so-slightly file the body with a nail file to allow it to properly reach the 28T cog nearest the wheel.

IF you are using friction SHIFTERS, you should be OK.

Only catch I see is the chain. If you have a older 6-spd chain, it'll be too wide to fit into the smaller gap between cogs on an 8-spd cassette. Just give it a try and if you find the chain riding on top of the cogs and not dropping down, just replace the chain with an 8-spd one.

Thanks guys, this will really come in handy. I am making this bike into a tourer so the extra cogs will be very useful
