derailer problem

I bought an older cannondale criterium bike not long ago and i've recently had trouble getting it to hold its gear. When i shift the level a position or two, the thing freaks out and keeps changing gears rapidly. Any idea about what's going on with my bike? thanks for reading!

Possibly a bent derailleur hanger, or the shift cable tension needs adjusting.

Tighten the screws that your levers pivot on so they stay put.
