Holes in Frame + Stem

Hi, I'm new to this forum and i joined because i am having problems with my vintage (1976 i believe) Raleigh Grand Prix Road Bike. I found this bike in my uncle's garage and he said i could have it and i am currently trying to convert it to a fixed gear bike. One major problem i have is a stem that will not come out of the fork, i am not sure as to the proper way to remove it, but i have searched this forum and i believe i have a frozen stem, but is there a way to remove a threaded stem from the fork? all i did so far was loosen the headset "nuts" i guess and the screw that was on top of the stem and i expected it to come out with a little bit of force, but i've been hammering down on the stem and it isn't coming out (i don't plan on using the stem or handle bars) but i do need the fork. Also, my uncle (for lack of a better word) stupidly welded a kick stand to the bottom end near the bottom bracket tube (i am not good with names) but we chipped it out and now there are 4 holes from where the kickstand was melted in, is this bike safe to ride, or can i repair these holes. here is a picture. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I would NOT trust that. Its your ass on the line though, up to you

Grand Prix is not anything particularly special, I would scrap it and move on. I have a Grand Prix frame (without big holes in the chinstay) that I'd be happy to send to you for cost of shipping. Its a 52cm frame if I recall correctly. Needs a new headset and new bottom bracket (crazy Whitworth threading)

The welding damage to the lower stays has pretty much toasted that frame. I sure wouldn't trust it as it is.

If you're good and don't mind the repair work you COULD find a donor frame and use some of the metal to braze on long patches over the weld damaged areas. Or perhaps even change out the lower stays alltogether. But this is only worth it if the frame really has some fairly highly significant sentimental value. As it sits now it's trash bin material.

Hitting DOWN on the stem isn't how to get it out. The steel wedge is stuck in there at least and hitting down on the stem is just jamming the stem in all that much harder. You want to hit it UP and out after removing the stem bolt. Then dribble in some penetrating oil or spray in some WD40 and let it sit overnight. At the same time once you have the stem out and the headset nuts off the upper part of the headset you should be able to pull the fork out.

If the aluminium of the stem has corroded into place in the fork steerer then you've got a problem. But again hit the joint with penetrating oil and let sit overnight. You may be able to tap it upwards and then twist it out.

I agree with the above comments - some frames aren't worth saving and you happen to have one of those.

If ilnn comes through with his offer that would be really cool. Make sure the frame is the right size for you before you go through the trouble and expense of shipping it.

No heat to the frame. It weakens it. Even if you add metal, it will be weaker.

Go with the replacement frame from #2.
