Mountain bike rear deraiileur on old road bike

Ok, The ancient Huret Allvit on my 1974 Raleigh Record is fading finally. I just got a mountain bike derailleur off a Huffy Mountain Bike.

I know, please don't LOL too hard. But it did have Shimano SIS components, so I stripped it. Those old thumb shifters were pretty cool in their day, some still swear by them.

I figure any type of Shimano is better than that Huret.

The Huffy MTB had a five speed rear cog, so I think this will work. Has anyone ever tried this? I noticed when you go on REI's site they don't list MTB or road, just whatever speed it is. Hmmm. And God, are derailleurs expensive new. whew.

If it'll bolt on, it'll work.
Had to do a similar swap for my brothers old Takara after somebody kicked his SunTour RDER into his spokes.
Had to lengthen the chain though.

Thanks Bill, oh doh!!! I forgot about the chain length. Maybe I can use the chain off the Huffy. It's in good shape.

Why? If the gearing was the same, the rear derailleur has no effect on required chain length.

It does when you go from a SunTour Honor to a X Mart Shimano MTB RDER!
Unless it was just my imagination that the chain tightened up like a banjo string when I shifted to Big:Big!

The longer cage should want an extra link or 2. But meh, minor details.
