convert mtb to single
i have an old raliegh m20 mtn bike...i want to convert it to a single speed....
1. Can i buy a new 700c tire set and put it on this frame instead of the 26 tires on there?
2. Can i leave the front rings on and just use a chain tensor to use the different front rings (I would just move them manually when needed)

The 700c is only an option if you run it fixed and swap out the fork for a 700c from a hybrid or 29er. The brakes won't line up with the bigger rims. Probably not economical.
If you use the derailer as the tensioner, you will be able to swap rings up front, but you will have problems with the chain dropping of the chainrings due to chainline issues. Unless you leave the front derailuer on.(kind of defeats the purpose of going SS.)
Any single speed tensioner you buy won't be able to handle that much chain slack.
Dingle speeds sound like more trouble than they're worth. That is where you run two front rings and two cogs and set them up so that you can get away with the same chain length for either combination, But may be the solution you are looking for.
