I was wondering if anyone could tell me the function of this other opening on the shifter in the photo below? (Shown via pen).

Some Shimano shifters used to have a "Central Information" deck. It was a mechanical, cable driven, gear indicator.

Yea, that deck kind of looked like a miniature dashboard looming over your stem.
