Snapping noise in pedals

Quick hello. New to this forum. Just got back on the saddle after a looooooong hiatus. Never again! Anyway, one of my pedals makes a snapping noise on the downstroke that's getting louder every ride. They're just regular toe-straps with about 100 miles on them and they haven't gotten too submerged in mud yet. I have some SPD's but there's no way I'm putting them on until I get a solid season of riding in.
The bike is an `07 Novara Bonanza hardtail. Just retired my Bridgestone. Like my old ride, my bike savvy is stuck in 1995 but not for long. TIA.

Check to be sure the pedals are threaded in firmly. Remember the right pedal (drive side) has conventional right-hand threads but the left pedal is left-hand threaded so it tightens the reverse of usual.

Also, the click could be in the pedal bearings or the bottom bracket.

BTW, if the bike is that new, REI should check it under warranty.

I would also check to make sure the crank has no play in it, and if so try adjusting it. I think it's the crank and not the pedals, but could be the pedals.
