I missed the thread before you edited, but looking at the title, I'l guess the question. Had to do with vertical dropouts, right?
The answer, asuming that was the question, is sometimes. The last two Shimano Alfine conversions I have done both came out with perfect chain tension in vertical dropouts with no tensioner. Odds are steep against it, but sometimes it works.
