what exactly IS the difference between campi and shim/sram chainrings?

I know 1 works with the other, but whenever you I use campi rings with shimano chain it seems kinda loud, and visa versa gets the same noise.

Many of the high end cranksets (FSA erc) actually sell them either 'C' for campy or 'S' for shimano/sram.

So what exactly is the difference?
