To build a rear wheel with internal hub, I will need what exactly?.
Hi all. The Sachs Torpedo Pentasport on my 1960'2 Raleigh Granada Tourist fell apart the other day while riding. The plastic "thiggamajig" which connects the cable to the hub chain broke, and I would like to rebuild my back wheel with an old-school Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub
I have already bought a SA 3-speed hub on eBay, and I will keep the current rim. Then I'll use an online spoke calculator to figure out what length spokes I need. I have built wheels before, so I'm not worried about that part. My question is, exactly what parts will I need in addition to the hub itself and the trigger shifter. I've never assembled an internal hub before.
This is my bike: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/429599-my-first-vintage-bike-raleigh-granada.html

you need a cable to run from the shifter to the hub ., also some lube for the nipples and spokes.

If your new SA hub doesn't have one, you'll need an "indicator chain". These are pretty cheap- couple of bux- but sometimes a little hard to find nowadays. Also, not just any gearshift cable will work- you need an SA compatible one with the tiny torpedo on one end and the adjustment barrel with a cable clamp on the other.
Looking at Yehuda, though (nice looking bike BTW), if it's just the plastic widget that broke, I'd try to find or kludge up one of the steel adjustment barrels to replace the plastic thing. 5-speeds are better than 3, really. I wouldn't replace the hub unless it grinds and clunks and stops turning or something indicating internal damage. Even then, I'd probably take it apart to make sure it wasn't salvageable.
edit- also if you don't have the anti-rotation washers and the long extension nut for the right side, it's good to have those, too.

Make sure your rim has the same number of holes as the SA hub (I'm not trying to patronize); many of the AWs are 40H hubs, and it's harder to find rims for those.
You will need spoke washers to use with new spokes. The flanges on SA hubs are narrower than current ones. I've seen several theories of how many washers you'll need. I only used one per spoke head because I hadn't seen other info to the contrary when I built my wheel. You can decide who prevails:

Check out Sheldon for the inventory of parts on the hub and cable. Find the ones you're missing. Anti-rotation washers are a must.

What does the plastic part that broke look like? Is it not possible to make a new one?
Checked out the bike on the link you showed. Yehuda's a smart lookin' ride. How'd you rate getting something that old in such nice shape? He looks like he just rolled out of a time capsule.
And somehow it just doesn't seem right calling a bike, car, boat or airplane a "he"....

Do you mean the indicator rod? Is indicator spindle another name for the same thing? The thingy located at step 7 on Sheldon's AW page?: https://sheldonbrown.com/sturmey-archer/aw.html
Yep, that's the one I meant
