Zipping sound while coasting
Pretty new to cycling so this may seem pretty newbie:
I ride a 2008 Caad 9 with Shimano Altegra components. I notice that when i'm not peddling my bike doesn't make any noise, whereas when others aren't peddling their bike makes a zipping/spindle noise that we are all familiar with.
I think this is a good safety feature, as the noise to alerts those around you, especially when you have speed. Is there a way to activate this feature?

That's freehub noise.
Some brands make much more such noise than others. Even within the same brand, some hubs are noiser than others.

It is also sometimes easier to hear it on other people's bikes than your own.

Sounds like angry bees, doesn't it?

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
My Shimano wheels were pretty quiet; my Fulcrums are LOUD. The hubs on my commuter and MTB are dead silent.

I think the pawls in the Ultegra hubs disengage when you're coasting, so they're quieter. Don't worry about the noise at all. The Phil Wood hubs sound like a billion bees behind you, and they're excellent hubs.

I over heard at a bike shop yesterday that, better hubs make more noise because they have more pawls. The reason for more pawls is so the hub will engage quicker.

That would change the frequency of the sound, but not the volume.
