Sugino 75 Bottom BB problems on Bob Jackson

I just installed a 109 mm Sugino 75 Bottom Bracket into my 68 mm Bob Jackson BB shell.. and something isn't right.

Check out the (****ty) pictures - that adjustable cup is threaded to the point of no slop/easy spin. It looks like I have the wrong spindle? Its marked sugino 75 just like every other part. With the cup sticking out so much I don't have enough spindle to install the cranks without running into the BB. Am i missing something painfully obvious?

cross posted.

Can we assume you put the bearings in correctly?

Length isn't going to impact where the spindle falls relative to the shell. You've ****ed something up.

You know I figured after working with a few old BBs, I would assume I knew how to put the bearings in correctly too..

That's what I get for assuming! I'm an *******, But i'm glad it was that simple.

Thanks.

so did you get it fixed?
I was wondering if the spindle turned properly (smooth but no play) when you'd taken the above pictures. Also, any chance it's a 73mm BB and you stuck it in a 68mm frame? (I'm not sure those are compatible, but they may be).

Are there bearing retainers in the cups? Make sure they're not installed backwards. Do a trial fit with the cup and spindle off the bike first.

You might as well pop the bearings out of the retainers and use loose-bearings. Spreads the load out more and avoids the potential issue of backwards retainers.

I always throw the retainers away. Eleven 1/4" balls per side. If you put your grease in the refrigerator for a while, it will hold the balls in place until you can insert the spindle. Or, you can put the frame on it's side while you fill the fixed cup.

The grease alone is enough to secure the balls temporarily, no need to refrigerate anything.

The grease doesn't hold the balls well when it's 100 degrees in the garage.
