The reason I don't have a kickstand, and will not get one isn't because they aren't useful -- there are plenty of times when I could have used one and wished I had one. The problem is that they facilitate what I consider to be a big mistake -- either not locking or free-locking my bike.

Now, since I don't have a kickstand, whenever I'm tempted to leave my bike somewhere convenient, I instead either keep the bike with me or lock it to something solid. As countless folks have learned the hard way, if you see someone grabbing your bike, they've still got your bike.

I wouldn't trust anyone who uses burning as their method for dork disc removal to adjust a derailleur properly. Therefore, the person who did it, probably needs a dork disc.

Ironic???

I also like the visual that an earlier post brought to mind, lighting the dork disc on fire then riding the bike to keep the wheel cool. I could just imagine that scene...

Sorry, who are you? If I knew, maybe I'd realize just how "in my face" you are.

In some countrys its the law to have reflectors and a bell fitted. Maybe even chain guards and mudguards.

I like dork discs er spoke guards. I like old Raleighs. They often had nice Alloy ones.

I have seen spoke guards that are a large disc that only covers the spokes at the edge of the big cog. Not right down to the hubflange where the chain will chew the spokes

I also like side stands. Those old Raleighs have them welded onto the frame.

If your using a bike for light leisure riding. These accesories help in making the bike ride more enjoyable.

Funny stuff. I have a 15 year old Trek 850 that still has the original "dork disk", and it has developed a really cool patina with age. I bet my dork disk is older than your dork disk!

Have you considered modifying a Frisbee into a giant dork disk? Just think of how much advertising you cram onto that thing. I guarantee it would turn heads.

I liked the term "dork disk" so much, I submitted it to the urban dictionary.

I think there may be a market for spoke protectors that are made of titamium or carbon fiber.

There should be some with dimples, and huge logos from Zipp, Campagnolo and others, and they would suddenly become cool. Put a huge Zipp logo on them, and a significant proportion of the populace would suddenly be asking how to replace damaged decals instead of how to remove them.

They should also become big enough to start to provide some aero benefit so they are embraced by the tri racers and wannabes...

So far I found most of the parts.
That much C4 plus ball bearings equals Claymore!

But C4 is the proper way to deal with gatorskins, and my dentist uses it for root canal work. I have half a mind to argue with him...

You read my mind. There's a sucker...er...weight weenie born every minute.

That reminds me of some fenders that I saw with Dura-Ace stickers on them. Personally, I thought the 105s would've worked just fine.

Memories. Wonder if someone can dig up the load bearing decal thread from the mountain bike sub forum?

and I thought I was crapping myself laughing when I STARTED reading this thread. Once I hit 'my bear hands' I devolved into hysterics. Oh man, that was great.

I love thinking outside the box, and I'm all for a solution that's outside the bounds of the conventional, but I could sit and think about ways to remove a pie plate for DAYS and never think "OOH, I COULD LIGHT IT ON FIRE!" I don't think the op is joking, but I do suspect he may be the missing link.

I've never managed to work up any important amount of engagement regarding spoke protectors either way. I've never removed one for the explicit purpose of removing it, if it wasn't fracturing and falling apart due to age anyhow. OTOH I've never replaced one that was fractured either.
But setting one on fire while in situ, that was rich.
