Bulge in rim at base of spokes
This was addressed a year or so ago in what appeared to be a lesser instance. The photo is of a 10 year old CXP21 rim which has bulges at the base of two or three spokes on either side of the valve.
Do you think the integrity of the rim is compromised? Wheel is true. Thanks, Rick http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3175/...b8c6c6039.jpg? |
May be true now but when one or more of those nipples pop through the rim bet is won't still be true.

yea, the rim is all dieded and stuffs... At least 10 years is a pretty good run for a rim.
You can have it relaced if you want with a new rim but at 10 years old unless you have some ****** 10 year old hubs i would just build up a new wheelset. |
Yeah you can still ride it a little, but the integrity of the rim is starting to compromise. Soon you'll start breaking spokes or developing cracks or bulges elsewhere on the rim because the slack spokes can never be brought up to equal tension again. The slack, or detensioned spokes (at the bulges) can no longer bear their share of the weight, so the weight and road shock is transfered to the other spokes, causing them to be over tensioned and therefore break. The bulges in your rim are now the weak link and will only get worse.
I hate to say this, but the bulges in your rim were most likely brought on by years of neglect. What I mean by this is that the spokes were not kept in a constant state of equal tension, where all the spokes were bearing their share of rider weight and the road shock they incur. I learned this the hard way with an old set of Open 4 CD rims I had. They started developing cracks around two eyelets and the worse crack actually separated, unwinding all tension forever on that spoke. |
Thank you, all, for the replies.
I have owned the wheels (the front looks fine) for only the last year of their lives, but I have gotten about 2500 miles out of them. No complaints with that. |
